Georgescu-Roegen maintains that the economy is subject to the laws of thermodynamics, and that unlimited economic growth is impossible due to the energy and material limitations of the planet. He argues that the traditional approach to economics, which focuses on economic growth and increased consumption, is unsustainable in the long term and is leading the planet towards an environmental and energy crisis.

Instead, Georgescu-Roegen proposes an economy based on energy conservation and efficiency, and reducing unnecessary consumption and production. He argues that the economy must be seen as a subsystem of the global biosphere system, and that it must adjust to the ecological and physical limits of the planet.

The book Entropy Law and the Economic Process has been highly influential in ecological economics and has led to greater recognition of the importance of entropy and ecological limits in economics. Georgescu-Roegen is considered one of the founders of ecological economics and his book remains relevant in the current debate about sustainability and the future of the global economy.
