An American geographer and science writer, he is also an evolutionary physiologist. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom) and is a professor of geography at the University of California, Los Angeles.

He is the author of numerous books, such as Collapse, Guns, Germs, and Steel..., exploring the demise of great civilizations and reflecting on the historical relationships between civilization, energy, and violence.
